Cinema - Movie References

Strange as it may, these are movies that were referenced in the Interview With The Vampire.

Don Juan

Filmed in 1926, it starred John Barrymore as Don Juan. It's the story of Don Juan, a man that learned that women were nothing more than life, disillusionment and death. He has affairs with many women but only one that has constantly shunned him is the one who will eventually do him in. I wonder if Louis felt this way about his Dark Gift. That he feeds from mortals but not one of them loves him back in return?

Gone With The Wind

Filmed in 1939, it starred Clark Gable as Rhett Butler and Vivian Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara. Probably one of the most watched movies around. It's a love story between Scarlett and Rhett and their inevitable separation due to lack of communication. Sounds like Lestat and Louis. No wonder Louis went to see this. This movie was also in color, giving Louis a chance to see the sun in technicolor bliss.

Nosferatu

Filmed in 1922, this German silent film starred Max Schreck as Nosferatu. It has been credited as the oldest filmed version of the novel Dracula. For those who don't know the what Dracula is about, it's about an aristrocratic vampire who gets paid a visit by Johnathon Harker. After his visit, Nosferatu pays him a visit and falls for Harker's fiancee, Nina who eventually kills the vampire. Filled with all the vampire myths like mirrors and crosses. Also, this version of Dracula is perhaps the most closely represented to the original novel because he wasn't supposed to look beautiful but with long horrendous clawlike hands. Louis saw the black and white version of the sun here. I wonder what thoughts were going through his mind while watching this? Did he view himself as Dracula...shunned from society?

Sunrise

Filmed in 1927, it starred George O'Brien and Margaret Livingston. It's about the tale of a farmer who falls for a fancy city woman who subsequently tells him to kill his wife. It is also where Louis saw the sun in black and white. Strangely, I wonder if Louis thought of Lestat while watching this film. For Louis felt he killed Lestat after Louis did nothing while Claudia did him in.

Superman

Filmed in 1978, it starred Christopher Reeve as Superman/Clark Kent and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane. Basically, it's the story based on the comic. For those who never heard of it, it's about an orphan boy from the planet Krypton who is adopted by humans. He then realizes his powers and past and goes to Metropolis to become a superhero and save the world from bad guys. Working as a reporter for the Daily Planet in disguise, he also falls in love with another reporter Lois Lane who only loves Superman and not the reporter. This is where Louis also sees the sun in color. Also, it seemed so much like his relationship with Babette Freniere...loves her but she only loved the angel who came to her in the dark, not the devil that he later revealed on that fateful night.

Tequila Sunrise

Filmed in 1988, it starred Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfieffer, and Kurt Russell. It's about a cop who's best friend also happens to be a drug dealer. They end up both falling love with the woman who owns a restaurant they frequent. Louis was seen walking out of the theater that showed this film (probably in disgust at such a poor excuse for a movie).
